Looks Like Sugar, Tide Vs. Sooners

Auburn's win in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game, coupled with Ohio State's loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten title contest, will put Auburn against Florida State in the BCS National Championship Game.

Alabama was ranked fourth in the BCS standings going into Saturday's games and it is likely the Crimson Tide moves up to third when the BCS standings are announced Sunday night. New Orleans believes that the Sugar Bowl will match Bama against Oklahoma, which defeated Oklahoma State Saturday to finish the regular season at 10-2.

Alabama, which had been ranked first in the nation since winning the national championship at the end of the 2012 season, dropped to fourth in the polls and in the BCS standings following the 34-28 loss to Auburn in the regular season finale. Missouri had been fifth, but lost to Auburn in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta Saturday to finish 11-2.

Stanford defeated Arizona State and will represent the Pac-12 in the Rose Bowl. Michigan State's win over previously undefeated and second ranked Ohio State sends the Spartans to the Rose Bowl as the Big 10 representative. Baylor defeated Texas to win the Big 12 championship and the Fiesta Bowl bid that goes with it. The Fiesta is expected to have UCF as the opponent for Baylor.

The Orange is expected to have Clemson of the ACC against Ohio State.

There has been some talk of Oregon (12-2) as an opponent for Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

All bowl game pairings will be announced Sunday night.

The Sugar Bowl is played at 7:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, Jan. 2, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

Alabama has played in more bowl games than any other team, 60, and has more bowl victories than any other college, 35. The Tide has played in 13 Sugar Bowl games.

Bama has an 8-5 record in Sugar Bowl games. Although the Tide's last appearance in the Louisiana Superdome was a satisfying 21-0 win over LSU, that was not the Sugar Bowl. It was the BCS National Championship Game at the end of the 2011 season. The Tide's last Sugar Bowl win was far from pleasant. Bama had been in national championship contention through most of 2008, but lost to Florida in the SEC Championship Game and went to New Orleans to face Utah in the Sugar Bowl. The Utes shocked Bama, 31-17.

Prior to that, the Tide's most recent Sugar Bowl had been the 34-13 win over Miami for the national championship at the end of the 1992 season. Alabama also won national championships with a 14-8 win over Penn State at the end of the 1978 season and with a 24-9 win over Arkansas at the end of the 1979 season.

Alabama has a losing record against Oklahoma at 1-2-1, with the two losses coming in regular season play in 2002 and 2003. In bowl games, Bama is 1-0-1 against the Sooners. In the Orange Bowl at the end of the 1962 season, Alabama – led by Lee Roy Jordan on defense and Joe Namath on offense – defeated the Sooners, 17-0. At the end of the 1970 season, the teams met in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston and fought to a 17-17 tie.

Oklahoma leads the nation in 10-win seasons, with Alabama second.
