Bama Is Third In AP, Coaches Polls
Alabama is third in both polls and the Crimson Tide, 11-1, is expected to be announced as the Sugar Bowl representative from the SEC. Bama's opponent in the Jan. 2 Louisiana Superdome game is expected to be Oklahoma (10-2), but conceivably could be Ohio State (12-1) or Oregon (10-2).
Florida State received 56 first place votes and Auburn four first place votes in the Associated Press poll of sportswriters and sportscasters. The Coaches Poll conducted by USA Today gave all 62 first place votes to FSU.
After the top three, Michigan State was fourth in both polls. The Spartans (12-1), who defeated Ohio State for the Big Ten championship, are headed for the Rose Bowl to play Stanford (11-2), which was fifth in the AP and seventh in the Coaches.
The three teams thought likely to provide the opposition for Bama in New Orleans are ranked in the top 10 in one or both polls. Oklahoma is 10th in the Coaches, 11th in the AP. Ohio State (which most expect to play in the Orange Bowl against Clemson) is sixth in the Coaches, seventh in the AP. Oregon is 10th in the AP, 12th in the Coaches. Clemson (10-2) is 11th in the Coaches, 121th in AP.
