Things Could Get Tougher For Tide

Last week's Bama Bash had its good for Alabama softball, but also had it's bad. This week the competition gets a lot tougher as Bama softball team of Coach Patrick Murphy hosts its Crimson Classic.

Although it is not inconceivable that a top ten softball team could lose to McNeese in its own tournament, it was still an unpleasant surprise when Alabama closed out the Bama Bash with just that loss, a 5-3 setback that left the Tide with a 12-3 record.

But enough of the bad...

Alabama defeated Virginia Tech by 14-5 on Saturday and that marked the 800th coaching victory at Bama by Patrick Murphy. He is the 15th active Division I coach to reach the 800-win plateau at his or her present school. Murphy and Arizona's Mike Candrea are the only two out of those 15 that are averaging over 50 wins per season.

Alabama has its next action Tuesday when the Crimson Tide plays at UAB in Birmingham. First pitch is at 6 p.m. CST.

Alabama hosts the Crimson Classic at Rhoads Stadium Friday-Sunday. Alabama will play Purdue at 4 p.m. and Houston at 6 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the Tide meets 10th-ranked Florida State at 1:30 and Houston at 4 p.m. CST. the tourney concludes Sunday when Alabama and FSU play beginning at 1:30.

Junior infielder Danielle Richard ended her career-long hit streak at 10 games after failing to earn a hit against Virginia Tech on Feb. 22. Her 10-game hitting streak is the longest for any Crimson Tide player this season.
