Offense, Pitching Key Tide Over UAB

BIRMINGHAM – Alabama rebounded from its Sunday loss with a quality shutout at UAB Tuesday, downing the Blazers 5-0.

Alabama (13-3) had another offensive showcase, earning 12 hits including a pair of doubles and a home run. Haylie McCleney and Kaila Hunt each went 3-4, with McCleney blasting her fifth home run of the season. Leslie Jury (6-1) threw another gem in the circle, going the distance for her seventh complete game of the season and her fifth shutout.

UAB (3-8) fell behind early and couldn't dig out of it, as starter Leigh Streetman (3-4) only lasted 3.1 innings with three earned runs. Lannah Campbell pitched 3.2 strong relief innings, but the Blazer offense couldn't back her up, leaving nine runners on base.

McCleney didn't waste any time putting the Tide on the board, leading off the game with a solo home run off the right-field scoreboard to make it a 1-0 game. Alabama stretched the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, as Molly Fichtner blasted an opposite-field double that scored two.

With two on and one out in the top of the fourth, Lannah Campbell entered to pitch for the Blazers as Streetman's outing ended after just 3.1 innings. Campbell got out of the jam and held the Tide scoreless until the top of the seventh, when Peyton Grantham hit a pinch-run RBI double and Hunt hit an RBI single to make it 5-0, which proved final.

This weekend, Alabama host the Easton Crimson Classic, as they welcome Purdue, Houston and No. 10 Florida State for five games over three days, beginning against the Boilermakers on Friday at 4 p.m. CST.
