Tide Men's Golf In Unfamiliar Position

LOS CABOS, Mexico – The top-ranked Alabama men's golf team shot a 10-over-par 294 in the first round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Sunday at the par-71, 6,948-yard Querencia Golf Club.

Alabama in third place, six shots back of host SMU and No. 11 Houston, who both carded 4-over-par rounds of 288. It marks the first time this season – 15 rounds over five events – Bama did not finish the day in the team lead. Vanderbilt and Baylor tied for fourth at 12-over 296.

UA has won all five events they have played in this season and 11 straight dating back to last season.

Senior Bobby Wyatt and freshman Robby Shelton paced the Alabama scoring Sunday with even-par rounds of 71 and enter Monday's second round tied for fourth individually. The Tide duo is three shots off the lead of Houston's Roman Robledo.

The Crimson Tide got a solid third score from freshman Gavin Moynihan at 1-over 72. It was Moynihan's second start for Alabama and his first since the season-opening event in September and left him in a tie for ninth place. UA struggled to find the fourth score on Sunday with Trey Mullinax shooting 80 and Cory Whitsett shooting a career-high 82. It was only the second time in 126 career rounds Whitsett failed to break 80.

Alabama will tee off at 10 a.m. (CST) Monday in a shotgun start. The Tide will play Monday's second round with SMU, Houston and Vanderbilt.
