Tide Men's Golf One Shot Too Many
Alabama shot the lowest round of the day with a 2-over 286 on the par-71, 6,945-yard Querencia Golf Club to finish at 12-over 864, but Houston's 6-over 290 was enough to hold on for the win at 863. Baylor finished third at 18-over 870, Kentucky was fourth at 872 while Vanderbilt and SMU rounded out the top five at 875 (+23).
The Crimson Tide now heads for Las Vegas and the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which gets underway on Friday at the Southern Highlands Country Club. Prior to the Cabo Collegiate, Alabama's last defeat was a tie for second in Las Vegas a season ago.
True freshman Robby Shelton led Alabama for the second straight tournament and the third time in six events with a 1-under-par 212. Shelton shot 1-under 70 in the final round to post a third place finish, which is his fourth top-five of the season.
Fellow true freshman Gavin Moynihan and senior Bobby Wyatt both carded top-10 finishes as well. Moynihan posted the best finish of his young career with a tie for sixth at 2-over 215 after an even-par 70 on Tuesday. Wyatt fired a 1-under 70 in the final round to tie for eighth at 3-over 216.
The nation's No. 1 golfer Trey Mullinax shot 75 in the final round to count as the Tide's fourth score. He tied for 38th overall at 12-over 225. Cory Whitsett's 77 was dropped from the team total on Tuesday as he finished tied for 52nd. His 17-over 230 marked his highest total in his 44-tournament career.
