But the four-star offensive lineman's day was bigger than just going up against the five-star, he was able to get the better of many different defensive linemen while working out at three positions on the afternoon.
It earned him MVP honors at his position and an invitation to The Opening in July.
"I was expecting it, but I knew I had to work hard for it," Cotton said. "It wasn't a given."
Splitting reps with Payne (as seen below), the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Central junior was excited to continue the rivalry with his friend.
"I wasn't expecting to win MVP with all of the talent out here, but I feel like when we go up against each other, which ever person loses the first rep will win the next," he said. "He got me the first time, but on the second, I was able to get my feet under me."
Cotton becomes the second Crimson Tide commitment to punch his ticket to the Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, along with fellow offensive lineman Dallas Warmack. Also like the four-star, the local prospect was on campus for spring practice recently.
"It was fast tempo," he said. "They make sure everything is fast. Everyone was out there doing there job."
Scout.com/BamaMag.com was able to get just about all of Cotton's reps during 1-on-1 action, and has it from the quarterback angle below.
