Soph Extends Tide Gymnastics Streak
"The dedication of our student-athletes at The University of Alabama is just amazing and this award is certainly a testament to all that they put into their academic and athletic careers," UA Coach Sarah Patterson said. "I'm so proud of Lauren and all she has done to earn this award."
Alabama is now a perfect five-for-five in the award that made its debut in 2010. The Elite 89 goes to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average at the final site of each of the NCAA's 89 championship. The Tide is also the only program across all sports to sweep the award.
"I am so appreciative of our administration and people like Jon Dever, Fern Hampton and everyone who works at the Bill Battle Academic Center," Patterson said. "The tools the University gives our student-athletes is what allows them to excel at the highest level."
Kassi Price won the inaugural award in 2010 and was followed by Rachel Terry, who earned the honor in back-to-back years in 2011 and 2012. Current senior Kim Jacob earned the award last season.
"No other school has five winners in one sport," Patterson said. "That's not something that we take for granted – we understand that we're in the midst of something that is truly special. When Lauren's name was called it took me back to when Kassi won the first award. Then I thought of Rachel winning back-to-back honors at the same time that we were winning back-to-back national championships and then Kim winning last year in Los Angeles. It's just an amazing time for our program in so many ways."
A native of Warren Center, Pa., Beers carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in exercise science. A vault All-American as a freshman, Beers won the vault at the NCAA Seattle Regional Championships two weeks ago.
On Friday, she and her teammates will compete in the second semifinal session of the NCAA Championships at the BJCC which gets underway at 7 p.m. CDT.
