Tide Tennis Wins Opening SEC Match
The doubles point would come down to the matchup on court three after Alabama and South Carolina split matches on one and two with the Gamecocks winning 8-4 on court one and the Tide by the same score on court two. Neither team went up by more than a break on court three, eventually sending the set into a tiebreaker. Alabama's Luicelena Perez and Emily Zabor took the first point and never looked back eventually winning 8-7(2) to take the match and award the Tide the doubles point.
Alabama won the first two singles matches to go up 3-0 thanks to a 6-2, 6-1 victory from No. 86 Perez on court six and a 6-2, 6-3 win from No. 115 Danielle Spielmann on court two, however South Carolina would go on to win the next two to pull within a point at 3-2. On court five, the Gamecocks' Caroline Daily won 6-2, 6-3, before No. 84 Elixane Lechemia held on at the top spot despite a tough battle from No. 55 Mary Anne Daines, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 73 Erin Routliffe and No. 85 Maya Jansen both lost first sets on courts three and four, respectively, but clawed their way back to win second sets over their South Carolina opponents. On court four, Jansen fought through some tough, long games at the end of her match and came away with the 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory to clinch the Tide's victory over the Gamecocks. Routliffe's match would go unfinished with her leading 4-1 in the third.
Alabama now plays the winner of the No. 4 Florida/No. 5 Texas A&M match on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
