Alabama assistant coach Lance Thompson is one of many Crimson Tide assistants busy on the recruiting trail this spring, and the state of Georgia is always a priority for the group.
Last week, one of his many stops was at Roswell (Ga.) High, to inquire about a rising-junior that figures to be a name to know in recruiting circles for the next two years.
"I got great news," Tre Lamar said. "Coach Thompson came to the school to say hey at school and talked with my coach Thursday.
"That was when I learned they liked me, I found out I had the offer today from my coach."
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound outside linebacker and early four-star projection by Scout.com has never been to Tuscaloosa. That fact could change this summer.
"I like them but I'll know for sure when I visit over the summer," he said. "I like both Coach [Nick] Saban and Coach Thompson.
"And I've been watching them play on TV since I was a kid. I was excited when I learned about it."
Lamar says the Tide is looking at him as a linebacker, though it could be as an inside talent or on the edge. He has no current preference, but says it's his "instincts as a linebacker" that has led to his early success on the trail.
Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin are some of several offers already to his name in addition to Alabama. He'll check out some of those and more on a big tour in the coming months.
"I'll be visiting a couple colleges, I don't know exactly all of them," Lamar said. "But definitely 'Bama, Mississippi State, Clemson, Miami and Vanderbilt."
