Tide Track & Field Next In NCAA

When the Alabama track and field teams go to the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet in Jacksonville, Fla., this week, the Crimson Tide will have both quantity – 16 men and 14 women – and quality – nine top-12 seeds on the men's side and four women. Competition will be Thursday-Saturday at Hodges Stadium on the campus of North Florida.

The East Region Preliminary features the top 48 qualifiers for each event in both the men's and women's competition. The top-12 finishers in each event will join the top 12 performers from the West Region to advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.

Alabama senior Yanique Malcolm enters as the top seed in the women's 800 meters thanks to her SEC-winning time of 2:03.28. Senior Diondre Batson (men's 100 meters), junior Remona Burchell (women's 100m) and sophomore Elias Hakansson (men's hammer) are No. 2 seeds in their respective events.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Batson, seniors Akeem Haynes and Alex Sanders and sophomore Dwight Davis will enter as the No. 3 seed. All four members of the relay team also will compete individually. Batson, Haynes and Sanders will run the 100m and Davis will compete in the 400 meters.

The rest of the Tide's men's competitors include junior Alex Amankwah (800m), freshman Jacopo Lahbi (800m), senior Matt Airola (1,500m), sophomore Justin Fondren (high jump), senior Kamal Fuller (long jump), sophomore Josh McCullan (long jump), sophomore Imani Brown (triple jump), redshirt freshman Kyle Felpel (shot put), redshirt freshman Hayden Reed (discus), redshirt freshman Joe Williams (discus) and junior Charodd Richardson (hammer throw). Amankwah, Davis, Lahbi and senior Ken Taylor will compete in the men's 4x400-meter relay.

Joining Burchell and Malcolm on the women's side are junior Dominique Kimpel (200m), freshman Alex Gholston (400m), sophomore Kimberley Ficenec (800m), sophomore Katelyn Greenleaf (steeplechase), freshman Lakan Taylor (pole vault), sophomore Anna Rawles (pole vault), sophomore Autumn Conn (pole vault), freshman Quanesha Burks (long jump), sophomore Lacey Dent (long jump), junior Merilyn Uudmae (triple jump), junior Candicea Bernard (shot put) and junior Nia Barnes (hammer throw).

Burks, Burchell, Kimpel and senior Sarah Thomas will compete in the women's 4x100-meter relay, with freshman Brianna Sims as an alternate. Kimpel, Gholston, Malcolm, and senior Shani Chandler will compete in the 4x400-meter relay.
