The spring evaluation period wrapped up this past week and Oxford (Ala.) High was once again a popular destination for FBS coaches. It wasn't as busy as last season, boasting five-star Racean Thomas on the roster, but there was news there nonetheless.
The top target among the Jackets could be wide receiver Tre Gamble. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder is heading into his senior season with high expectations surrounding his name, especially with Thomas departed to Auburn.
"A lot of coaches done came down and watched me," he said. "Louisville came, Memphis, Southern Miss, too. They are all saying that I'm good and they want me. They said they like my hand and blocking ability."
Of the group, the Cardinals made the impression that an offer was coming sooner rather than later for Gamble. After taking the ACT again, he feels it's only a matter of time before he receives word.
"They are close to offering, I have just got to send Louisville my ACT score," he said. "I already got my scores, I made a 20, and I just need to send them a hard copy."
In the meantime, it's about hard work and progress for one of the state's top weapons. The team capped its spring with a contest against Florence (Ala.) High in mid-May.
"We had a lot of players out, but we still managed to keep the game close, they beat us seven to 14," he said. "I had a couple of good catches and about 90 yards. They started doubling me over the top, I am getting used to that.
"I worked on my speed and just getting in shape. I think I got better, a whole lot."
The next step is to showcase his talent for schools that weren't able to see him extensively over the last several weeks, beginning in Tuscaloosa.
