Alabama Thrower Has Another Big Win

Sacramento, California – University of Alabama thrower Hayden Reed is the 2014 United States champion in the men's discus, having won the discus competition on Friday night at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships at Sacramento, California.

Reed, who competed as a redshirt freshman for Alabama this spring, is the 2014 NCAA outdoor discus champion. He also won the 2013 USATF Junior Championships and the 2013 Pan-American Junior Championships,

Nevertheless, Reed was a surprise winner against a field of seasoned, veteran athletes in his first nationals competition at the open/Olympic level. Reed won the event with a throw of 204 feet (62.19 meters) on his second attempt of the competition.

"That last round was nerve racking, (just) like NCAAs except every single thrower in the lineup today was capable of getting a farther throw," Reed said. "I'm incredibly excited to have the privilege of competing against the best athletes in the nation."

Reed is a native of Orange, Texas.
