Weekend Recruiting Rewind

Alabama remains atop the class of 2015 rankings on Scout.com and the 2016 class is off to a strong start, but a pair of prospects switched their commitments from UA over the weekend. It also hosted some surprise senior targets on Saturday, and more good news is seemingly on the horizon as well.

What a weekend, huh?

Alabama had the definition of an “up and down” few days over the weekend, hosting some key targets and losing a pair of defensive line commitments to SEC rivals.

On the positive side of things for Nick Saban and company, two of the visitors over the weekend were five-star Terry Godwin and four-star Daylon Charlot (pictured above). Godwin is committed to Georgia, but has now been to Tuscaloosa at least three times since making his January decision. BamaMag learned that he stayed in Tuscaloosa until Sunday after taking in the scrimmage on Saturday. Charlot is committed to Alabama, but was originally scheduled to be in Baton Rouge for another look at LSU, the in-state school giving UA plenty of chase for his signature. He is expected to make a “final decision” in January at the 2015 Under Armour All-America game.

But as mentioned, the Crimson Tide also lost out this weekend. Four-star Peach State defensive line prospect Jonathan Ledbetter elected to stay home and flip to UGA. While not a surprise, it was still a big blow to the versatility of the class of 2015. Now, T.D. Moton is the only Scout.com defensive tackle projection on the current commitment list. Of course, five-star and the top prospect within the state Daron Payne remains top priority going forward.

The defensive tackle position also took a hit in the 2016 class, as four-star junior Benito Jones also elected to stay in state, changing his commitment to Ole Miss while visiting Oxford over the weekend. Jones cites many reasons as to why he made the switch, but staying in-state is always near the top of a Mississippian’s priority list. UA now has three junior pledges, including one from Mississippian Raekwon Davis of Meridian (Miss.) High, who worked out as a defensive tackle en route to earning his UA offer at camp this summer.

Going Forward

The latter part of the week will be busy in Alabama recruiting news, not only with the high school football season beginning, but with the commitment ceremony for Joshua McMillon. The four-star linebacker, from Memphis (Tenn.) Whitehaven, has the Crimson Tide on his short list and he could fill multiple holes for the 2015 commitment list depending on his development. The No. 10 middle linebacker projection in America will go public with his pick on Friday afternoon.
