‘Bama offer would mean ‘a lot’

Alabama hosted a solid group of prospects for its home opener on Saturday, and the class of 2016 was well represented. Scout.com three-star wide receiver T.J. Simmons was among the juniors who made the trip, and he got to speak to the Crimson Tide staff in the process.

T.J. Simmons is one of the hottest juniors in Alabama, as he and his Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville teammates have been the talk of high school football fans in the Yellowhammer State with explosive offensive plays and gaudy stats.

The 6-foot-2, 189-pounder is a big part of it, and it has created more recruiting attention and buzz his way, resulting in a trip to Tuscaloosa on Saturday to see Alabama shut out Florida Atlantic. It was his third trip to campus as a recruit.

”It was fun, I got to talk to some coaches and see the campus,” he said. “I talked to Coach [Mario] Cristobal, he was just telling me that he was going to be real with me throughout the whole process, and he told me to keep coming to watch games.

“He said I got nice size, speed, and he said I was physical.”

Though he has yet to earn a scholarship offer from Nick Saban’s program, there is plenty of interest both ways. If the good news eventually comes down to the top junior pass catcher in the state, it could go a long way.

“I would mean a lot because I’ve been watching Alabama football my whole life,” Simmons said. “I’m a fan, kind of split between Alabama and Auburn. They’re recruiting me, too, but not as much as ‘Bama.

“I love the (UA) campus atmosphere on game day, and the facilities are state of the art.”

Saturday was the explosive threat’s first chance to see the Tide in action since he took in A-Day in April.

“I think that was a game where they were working to do better than the week before,” he said. “But Amari Cooper stood out. He is very explosive and the routes are great.”

Simmons, who currently holds offers from Cincinnati, South Alabama and Southern Mississippi, is also hearing from SEC programs Florida and Arkansas. The three-star plans on trying to get to games at each venue, though no dates are currently set. He has no timetable for a commitment.
