‘17 standout Askew returns to ‘Bama

Malcolm Askew is one of the top class of 2017 talents in the state of Alabama and he made a return trip to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.

Just a sophomore, Malcolm Askew has made a name for himself on SEC radars already. He reports a Georgia offer and made his second recent visit to Tuscaloosa on Saturday for Alabama’s home opener.

The McCalla (Ala.) McAdory athlete, who plays both ways, continues to hear positive things from the Crimson Tide coaching staff.

“It was great, we just chilled around in the recruiting room, kind of back and forth because of the heat at first,” he said, laughing. “But I talked with some guys, Keith Mixon and Daron Payne, joking around with Coach (Nick) Saban. Some other guys were, too, and I talked with Coach (Mario) Cristobal.

“We talked about how everybody’s games went on Friday and Coach Saban was joking around with Daron, me , and Keith about a touchdown Daron caught (Thursday night) and just saying he was glad to have us, and then Coach Cristobal asked how everything was going and he will try and come see me soon. They are still recruiting me, just waiting on film. They asked for my first four or five games so I will try and get that to them and they said they may come out to one of my games, so I hope they do that.”

As far as watching Alabama defeat FAU, the always analytical 6-foot, 165-pounder that UA covets as a safety at the moment, was surprised by some of what he saw.

“The game was great, it was a blow out. I was surprised ‘Bama threw the ball so much and Amari Cooper, Blake Sims, Eddie Jackson and Cyrus Jones stood out. Blake just improved so much since the summer and fall camp, so mature now. Amari is just a beast,” he said, laughing. “He will go and get it, run after the catch and has great speed. He’s a fun player to watch. Eddie just played lights out. I mean, I know it was Florida Atlantic, but he has it in him to do it every Saturday. Great coverage and man will he come down and hit! He had the crowd oohing and ahhing all day.

“To me, Eddie and Cyrus should be the full-time starters, hands down. Landon Collins is also a great leader in that secondary.”

Askew and the Yellow Jackets are 3-0 on the year and have an off week ahead.
