Almost Perfect Picks Got Assist From Henry

Midway through the fourth quarter in Atlanta last Saturday evening, a thought was shared with fellow ’BAMA Magazine/ reporters: “I think Derrick Henry is about to put them out of their misery.” Two plays later Henry was on a 27-yard gallop, the first of his two fourth quarter touchdowns.

With Derrick Henry putting not one, but two, nails in the coffin, Alabama defeated Missouri, 42-13, to win the Southeastern Conference Championship Game and move on to the inaugural College Football Playoff and a meeting with Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.

The first of Henry’s touchdowns was important to the Almost Perfect Picks panel, which was dealing with only one SEC game in that championship week.

The APP prediction had been Bama 38, Missouri 17. Before Henry’s two fourth quarter touchdowns the Tide had only a 28-17 lead.

With Henry’s first touchdown (and solidified by the second) the Tide had satisfied the requirements of 1. A straight up win, 2. A win against the point spread (14 ½) and 3. A win against the over-under on total points (49).

For the year, that puts the APP record in selecting games with SEC teams at 91-21. It’s not quite so good in gambling opportunities (against the spread and the over/under), only 100-76.

There’s tough work ahead for the APP panel. Twelve (count ’em, 12!) SEC teams will be playing in bowl games. We’ll have those predictions before conference teams begin bowl play on Dec. 27.
