3-star LB accepts academic ride at 'Bama

6-foot-1, 230 pounds and equipped with a 3.8 GPA, in-state 2015 linebacker Edwaun McNeil tells BamaMag.com that he'll attend Alabama on an academic scholarship. The three-star will look to walk-on to Nick Saban's football team.

Three-star prospects on Scout.com usually sign with a school on the first week of February, but there are always exceptions. Unfortunately, most of the ones that aren't able to point as academics as a barrier. Junior College then becomes a top option.

A smaller number choose not to because of other options, and Buhl (Ala.) Sipsey Valley three-star linebacker Edwaun McNeil is in this boat. In addition to football scholarship offers from Navy, Alabama A&M and Central Arkansas, the down-hill prospect began collecting academic scholarship offers from bigger programs.

Alabama was among them, and now the senior will be looking to walk-on under Nick Saban this fall.

"I applied for a general scholarship and they awarded me with the presidential scholarship because of my act score and my GPA," McNeil said. "My grade point average is 3.8. I was excited because I had another way to go to college other than a football scholarship."

Combined with an early ACT score of 30, the 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker will now be able to get the free education so many covet while potentially playing at the highest level.

"I think it's a great opportunity playing there because of all the great athletes I will get to compete against on a daily basis," he said.

Alabama signed projected linebackers Adonis Thomas, Joshua McMillon and Keaton Anderson on February 4, part of America's No. 2 recruiting class.
