Friday’s meet is Alabama’s first Rock the Arena event, with local favorite Doctors and Lawyers getting things started. It is also Academic Achievement Night, with local elementary school honor roll students receiving free admission with vouchers that were distributed at their schools.
“This meet is so exciting,” UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. “To bring another top-ranked opponent in here for what promises to be another great meet is an amazing opportunity for our ladies and our fans. This is the best LSU team I think I’ve ever seen. Then you have Rock the Arena, which is going to get everyone pumped up. On top of all that, you have Academic Achievement Night, which speaks to one of the cornerstones of our program – the importance of being your very best in the classroom – and it just doesn’t get any better.”
The Tide comes into Friday’s meet having posted three-consecutive 197.3-plus scores. The Tigers are also Alabama’s sixth opponent ranked in the top-12 nationally in its last seven meets. LSU is also the second team ranked in the top-two nationally to visit Tuscaloosa this season following then No. 1 Florida on Jan. 23.
While Alabama (6-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 in Southeastern Conference competition) posted its highest-road score, 197.675, last Friday against Georgia, LSU (9-1-0, 6-0-0 SEC) posted its season high of 198.075 at home against the Bulldogs on Feb. 6.
Coached by the dean of SEC gymnastics coaches, 38-year veteran D-D Breaux, LSU is led by senior Rheagan Courville who is ranked fifth nationally in the all-around. Alabama - led by the newest SEC head coach in first-year mentor Duckworth - is led by junior Lauren Beers and senior Kaitlyn Clark. Beers and Clark have posted career-best all-around scores of 39.650 and 39.625, respectively, over the past three weeks.
