FSU commit snags Crimson Tide offer, to visit

Alabama has done well with elites in the south Florida area over the last half-decade under Nick Saban, and it continues to attack the fertile recruiting ground, even despite some prospects being committed to in-state schools. The latest emerging target is defensive lineman Keir Thomas, a Florida State pledge.

Scout’s Recruiter of the Year for the 2015 cycle was Alabama assistant Mario Cristobal, who helped UA land plenty of elites, with a focus in the Sunshine State. As expected, it continues in the class of 2016 and beyond, with a recent target emerging within the roster of a national power program.

Despite his commitment to Florida State, Miami (Fla.) Central defensive lineman Keir Thomas learned of an offer by the Crimson Tide on Thursday morning.

“Me and Coach Cristobal have been communicating on Twitter, going back and forth,” he said. “One day, I asked if he had offered me, and he said he did. He said I got it. So I’m going to talk to them later on in my coach’s office.

“It feels good to be wanted by the best. Two of the top programs in NCAA football. I’m committed to Florida State, but I’m going to take my visits. I’m going to let them know that I’m still solid, but I will see what the other teams have to offer me.”

An early three-star on the network, many programs have remained on his trail despite his verbal status with the defending ACC champions. It’s been reciprocated, as Thomas is in search for more clarity not only with UA, but with programs like Louisville, West Virginia, Oregon State and TCU.

But the SEC extension creates a separate conversation.

“Kids from Miami, especially from the city, get an offer from Alabama and they’re like, ‘that’s that SEC football, I want to play SEC football!’” he said. “That is everybody’s dream, to play SEC football, because it’s big-time football.

“I’m supposed to go to a spring practice, or I’m going to try to make it in the summer. I really have got to see, I really have to go and talk to Coach Saban, talk to these head coaches…”

Thomas doesn’t have any concrete visit plans going forward.
