Osorio Shutout, Tide HRs Beat Auburn

The pitching of Alexis Osorio and home runs from Haylie McCleney and Chaunsey Bell enabled Alabama to take a 6-0 victory over Auburn in the first game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series in Auburn Friday.

Freshman Alexis Osorio went the distance as Alabama became the first team this year to shut out the powerful Auburn squad. Osorio held the Tigers to five hits, tying for lowest by AU this year, and struck out her season-best 13.

Haylie McCleney’s two-out, grand slam home run in the third inning provided all the cushion Osorio would need. Chaunsey Bell clubbed a pair of solo home runs, one in the fourth inning and one in the sixth.

Alabama pitching has now stretched its streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run to 41. Osorio (12-5) stretched her own scoreless streak to 18 innings, as she threw the complete game shutout.

Alabama is now 34-9 overall and 11-5 in SEC games, while Auburn fell to 40-7 overall, 12-4 in the conference.

Game two of the weekend series is set to start at 5 p.m. CDT on Saturday. The game will be aired live on ESPNU.

In the two college softball polls, both teams are sixth in one, seventh in the other.
