Littlejohn's Shutout Gives Tide Sweep

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After two high-scoring wins to open the series, offense was at a premium in the weekend finale against Arkansas as a seventh-inning RBI single by Danae Hays was all Alabama needed to win, 1-0, and secure the series sweep.

Alabama (41-11, 17-7 SEC) and Arkansas (16-37, 1-23 SEC) only tallied a combined five hits throughout the first six innings before the Crimson Tide strung together three hits in the seventh inning that ultimately allowed Danae Hays to drive in Marisa Runyon on an RBI single for the lone run of the day. Alabama starter Sydney Littlejohn (15-1) threw a complete game shutout in the circle, allowing just four hits, while Arkansas starter Haley Meinen (1-8) also went the distance in the tough-luck loss in the regular season finale.

The two teams cruised along for six innings as neither offense could put together a scoring rally. Runyon got things started for Alabama in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single and advanced all the way to third on another single by Leona Lafaele. Later with two outs in the half-inning, Hays hit a high chopper up the middle to drive in Runyon from third and give the Tide a 1-0 lead, which it took into the bottom half of the inning. The Razorbacks would lead off the bottom half of the inning with a single but could not break into the run column, as two strikeouts and a popup ended the game with Alabama holding on for the slim 1-0 win.

Next up, Alabama begins postseason play at the 2015 SEC Tournament in Baton Rouge, La. The Tide enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed, earning a first round bye before beginning play on Thursday, May 7 at a time to be determined. Alabama will face the winner of Wednesday’s game between the No. 6 and No. 11 seeds.
