Saban, Johnson At Regions Tradition Golf

Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban and Crimson Tide Basketball Coach Avery Johnson participated in the Regions Tradition Golf Pro-Am Celebrity Champions Tour event held on Wednesday morning at Shoal Creek in Birmingham. The senior professionals will play the major championship event over the next four days.

Nick Saban, a regular in the event over his extraordinary Alabama career, was paired with one of the all-time golf greats, Tom Watson, a 39-time PGA Tour winner. Avery Johnson, new to the Crimson Tide family, was no stranger to his pro-am partner. He played with three-time PGA Tour winner, Jeff Maggert, a former neighbor of Johnson’s in Texas.

Self-proclaimed golf amateur Johnson, continues his quest to gain visibility by promoting Alabama basketball at every opportunity. Tuesday, the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA dismissed their head coach, Monty Williams. Before the rumor mill exploded, Johnson, a New Orleans native, declared his loyalty to the Crimson Tide hoops program and stated for the record he has no interest in the opening. The affable basketball coach commented on the transfer of his son, Avery Johnson, Jr., along with pending staff, camp announcements and future scheduling options.

Although college football was a subject mentioned during the interview, so was Elton John, Tom Kite, Mack Brown and a specific consequence of the new playoff system Nick Saban feared would materialize.

A special member of the Bruno Event Team, which conducts the tournament, escorted him around the course. That would be daughter Kristen Saban.
