Three Tiders On Early Award Watch Lists

You’ve probably heard the last words of a redneck: “Hey, y’all! Watch this!” This time of year there are other things to watch. Many of the college football awards that will be presented at the end of the season announce the players who can be expected to be in the running. They are called “Watch Lists.”

In most cases, the lists will be revised over the year, expanded by the watchers during the season, then reduced down, perhaps to semifinalists and then finalists.

Alabama has won its share of these awards, particularly in recent years as the Crimson Tide of Coach Nick Saban has become the dominant college football program in the nation.

The first watch list of the year was that for the Paul Hornung Award, given to the nation’s most versatile player, and no Bama player made that list. But two big ones were announced Tuesday – the Maxwell Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding player (though it is overshadowed by the Heisman Trophy) and the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player.

Alabama players are on the Maxwell and Bednarik watch lists.

Upcoming junior tailback Derrick Henry is on the Maxwell Award watch list. The Bednarik Award watch list includes upcoming senior linebacker Reggie Ragland and upcoming senior defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson, who was a semifinalist for last year’s award.

Robinson was a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award last year as a sophomore.

Both the Maxwell Award and the Bednarik Award are presented by the Maxwell Football Club. The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter, and an official. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced November 2, 2015, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled November 23. The winners of the 2015 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the College Football Awards Show on December 10. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala in Atlantic City on March 11, 2016.

Other watch lists will be announced over the next couple of weeks. Expect Bama to be well represented.
