Nick Saban Nears Perfection With Win Over LSU

Nick Saban is a perfectionist driven football coach. The goals of winning national and conference championships demand the standards to be high. Rarely does the performance reach the lofty levels. Every football team envisions a complete and total victory against a rival foe. Reality matched the Tide's dream on Saturday evening.

Number 7th rated Alabama (8-1, 5-1) met and exceeded every objective of the approved model in defeating the no. 4 ranked and previously undefeated LSU (7-1, 4-1) Tigers 30-16 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The defensive performance was magnificent and the offensive ground game was overwhelming.

The run happy bullies from Baton Rouge averaging a sensational 309.1 ypg were held to a fraction of their normal output, 54. Stopping the SEC’s leading rushing attack was the prime consideration for the Tide. Alabama’s defense employed a gang tackling strategy to limit the nation’s top ground gainer, Leonard Fournette. The sophomore averaging 193.1 ypg finished the night with a mere 31 yards on 19 carries.

Running the football is a predominant chromosome in the offensive DNA of a Nick Saban coached football team. Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake were faced with the challenge of gaining ground against the league’s second ranked rush defense. LSU was surrendering only 93.7 ypg game prior to Saturday night. The duo aided by the outstanding performance of the offensive line exploded for a collective 278 with Henry rushing for 210 and Drake 68.

Watch the post-game Nick Saban press conference. The word “perfect” is mentioned early in the opening remarks by the coach with the five game winning streak over SEC Western Division opponent LSU.
