In-state LB Riley Cole says late Alabama grayshirt offer caused decommitment

The numbers game affects many longtime commitments all over the country as signing day nears and it could have caused Alabama to miss out on in-state linebacker Riley Cole.

Oneonta (Ala.) three-star linebacker Riley Cole committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide moments after it offered in June and he's been ignoring other college programs ever since because of how sure he was about being a scholarship addition to the national champions in a few months.

Things have changed, though, as Cole announced a decommitment from UA after what he reports as ill timing on a potential grayshirt scenario with Alabama.

"5 days before signing day 'Bama talks to me about grayshirting but won't give me a straight answer," the statement said. "I have informed tham that I have decided to decommit to find a team that values me as a player. I have prayed and prayed about this and it's the best decision for my future..."

Cole had added an offer from Wake Forest prior to committing to the Crimson Tide.
