Being selected as a Southeastern Conference athlete of the week is a major accomplishment, but sometimes it pales in comparison to the performance that earned that honor.
That would seem to be the case for Alabama track and field star Jeremiah Green, who earned SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after he set a new Crimson Tide record in the triple jump.
The junior from Tampa, Fla., ranks second in the country in the triple jump after the leap of 54-8 3/4 (16.68m) he recorded at last weekend’s Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. That effort set a new school record in the event. The previous record of 54-2 1/2 was set in 2002 by current jumps coach Miguel Pate. Green also jumped 23-4 3/4 (7.13m) in the long jump at the Tyson Invitational, producing a mark over seven meters in the event for only the second time in his career.
Green was also SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week during the 2014 indoor season.
Next action for Green and his Alabama track and field teams will be a return to Fayetteville for the SEC Indoor Championships Feb. 26-27.
