The Alabama women’s golf team of Coach Mic Potter showed why the Crimson Tide is the nation’s fourth-ranked team as Bama got off to a quick start in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Hilton Head Island, S.C., Friday.

Alabama had three players finish the opening round under par and the Tide has a three-stroke lead after recording a 6-under-par 278 over the 6,243-yard, par-71 Pete Dye Course at the Long Cove Club.

Freshman Cheyenne Knight’s 4-under 67, tied for the best individual score. Knight recorded five birdies, including three on the back nine. Sophomore Lakareber Abe and senior Emma Talley also came in below par, both 1-under 70.

Senior Janie Jackson balanced three bogeys with three birdies to end at even 71. Sophomore Nicole Morales was 3-over 74.

No. 32 Virginia is in second with a total of 281 (-3), while No. 42 Vanderbilt is one stroke behind for third. The remaining 14 teams were all over par on Friday.

The Tide will tee off at 9:10 a.m. CT on Saturday morning alongside the Cavaliers and Commodores.
