Alabama has five of seven units ranked best in SEC football according to Athlon

Alabama best in nation on defense in Athlon ranking of college football units

Athlon’s Southeastern Conference football magazine has always been one of the top two favorites among college football fans in the state of Alabama. This year’s Athlon is now available, and the magazine’s longtime feature of ranking the units of each team should make Crimson Tide fans feel good.

In today’s college football game, it may be that the “win with defense” adage is no longer accurate, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have good stop troops. Based on the Athlon ratings, Alabama should have an excellent defense.

And it is still true that if the opponent doesn’t score, you can’t lose.

Athlon rated the SEC teams’ units both in the nation and in the conference.

The units are Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver/Tight End, and Line on offense; and Line, Linebacker, and Defensive Back on defense.

The magazine ranks Alabama’s three defensive units – line, linebacker, secondary – as best in the nation.

On offense, the receiver group (wide receivers and tight end) and the line were ranked second in the nation.

All five units were ranked best in the SEC.

As for the other two units ranked, Bama was listed as having the fifth best quarterback unit (Alabama isn’t the only school where the quarterback has not yet been determined) and fourth best running back unit (again, even though the Tide’s starter is not yet known).

Our thanks to Franz Beard at Scout’s Florida site, FightinGators.com, for doing the heavy lifting and providing the lists showing SEC teams in Athlon’s national unit rankings and in the conference:
