Three University of Alabama golfers have passed an important stage in the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.
Upcoming Alabama sophomores Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson and incoming freshman Kristen Gillman were among the top 64 players completing two rounds of stroke play on Tuesday and advancing to the match play segment of the national amateur competition today.
Stephenson and Gillman finished stroke play at even par while Knight finished at one-under par. Gillman will face Annika Clark of TCU in the opening round of match play at 10:10 a.m. CDT. Knight will meet Ashley Holder of UCF of at 10:30 a.m. Stephenson will face Bethany Wu of UCLA at 12:10 p.m. Wu finished 27th at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Winners will advance to Thursday’s second round.
The tournament concludes Saturday with a 36-hole match play championship between the final two golfers.
Wednesday’s opening match play round will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 beginning at 2 p.m. CDT.
The Crimson Tide’s Emma Talley became the first Alabama golfer to win the Women’s U.S. Amateur when she captured the title in 2013 at Charleston (S.C.) Country Club. Talley completed her senior season in May. Gillman won the event in 2014 as a 16-year old.
