Very few surprises as Alabama depth chart is revealed for first game

Alabama provides a fresh depth chart twice each year

Alabama Coach Nick Saban enjoys poking the media regarding interest in the Crimson Tide football depth chart. No coach in recent history (meaning since about 1996) seems to get it that reporters want information for their readers, not for themselves. And based on questions I’m asked on a frequent basis, our readers are interested in the depth chart.

The first time I had a one-on-one interview with Saban I asked how he managed to practice without a depth chart, and regardless of what he said, I concluded there is a depth chart, even if the players are somehow in the dark about it.

Be that as it may, twice each year – prior to the first game of the season and prior to the bowl game (or, now, the College Football Playoff) – Saban issues a depth chart of sorts. It may include more than one player at a position. And, as he has pointed out, the depth chart is good for only one day. Positions are up for grabs in each practice and each game.

Nevertheless, the depth chart issued by Saban in late August ordinarily holds up pretty well through the season.

Prior to the revelation of the depth chart following Saban’s Monday press briefing, he said, "I know they're going to give you a depth chart, which you guys will just absolutely love. It used to be we created a depth chart, now you guys create the depth chart based on what you think. Just know that what you think doesn't count.”

Fair enough. I had a few errors on the one I had developed for a speaking engagement. I had Jalen Hurts as number two, or even co-number one, at quarterback. I had Ross Pierschbacher at center and Bradley Bozeman at right guard, but that switch was made in the last few days. I had the wide receivers about as mixed up (and yet as close together) as the official depth chart. Shaun Dion Hamilton surprised me as being listed No. 1 at middle linebacker and I was also surprised that Reuben Foster and Rashaan Evans were both listed at weakside.

All-in-all, though, the official depth chart was hardly full of surprises. Here it is:
