Alabama improves its all-time record against USC to 6-2

Loss to Alabama is historic for Southern Cal football

With Alabama’s 52-6 win over Southern Cal at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Saturday night, the Crimson Tide now has an all-time record of 6-2 against the Trojans. Bama has won four games in California (including one Rose Bowl), a bowl game in Hawaii, and the Tide’s win in Texas this year.

Both previous losses to the Trojans came in Birmingham’s Legion Field.

Here are notes from Alabama’s season-opening win:

Alabama’s 46-point victory was its largest margin over a top-20 ranked team since Bama beat No. 14 Syracuse by 55 points (61-6) in the 1953 Orange Bowl. It was the third largest margin of victory over a ranked tam in program history with the largest being the 59-0 win over No. 21 Texas A&M in 2014.

Alabama improved its record to 15 consecutive victories in season-openers. USC had its string of 17 consecutive season opening wins snapped.

Bama is now 98-21-3 in season openers. Nick Saban has won in each of his 10 season-opening games at Alabama.

The Crimson Tide has a 13-game winning streak going back to last year’s national championship run, which is longest in the nation.

Alabama’s 52 points were ther most allowed by Southern Cal in a season-opener. It was USC’s worst loss in a season-opener. Previously was a 30-0 loss to Whittier Reform in 1896. It was the worst loss by the Trojans in any game since a 51-0 loss to Notre Dame in 1966.

Alabama held Southern Cal without a touchdown, the first time the Trojans have failed to cross the goalline since a 27-0 loss to Washington in 1997. The last time USC did not score a TD in an opener was in 1960 loss to Oregon State. It was the Trojans’ fewest number of points since scoring 6 against Utah in the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl.

This is the 58th time Bama has held an opponent to fewer than 10 points under Saban.

Alabama has scored in the first half of its last 119 games, the longest streak in the nation. Bama has now scored in 199 consecutive games, longest in program history.

When Marlon Humphrey raced to the end zone with an interception of a Southern Cal pass Saturday night, it marked the 47th non-offensive touchdown of the Saban Era.

ArDarius Stewart’s 71-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was the longest reception of his career. Stewart finished witdh career highs in touchdown receptions (2) and yards (113).

Quarterback Jalen Hurts had two touchdowns passing and two rushing, the first time an Alabama quarterback has done that since Tyler Watts in 2001.

Honorary captains for the game were Johnny Musso, who led Bama to a 1971 win over USC, and Sam Cunningham, who led the Trojans to a 1970 victory over the Tide.

Alabama captains were tight end O.J. Howard, defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson, and linebacker Ryan Anderson.
