Western Kentucky (1-1, 0-0) was not so fortunate in the Tide’s 38-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama (no. 1, 2-0, 0-0) wide receiver Calvin Ridley tied his career high with nine receptions, registered a game high 129 receiving yards (3rd highest career total) and added six rushing yards on a jet sweep. He torched Arkansas with nine catches as a freshman.
The true sophomore scored his first touchdown of 2016 on a four-yard toss from true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts in the opening quarter. Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin directed five of the throws to Ridley for 98 yards in the first stanza. Four more came in the second half for an additional 31 yards. The century plus receiving yardage total was the fifth in his career.
Hurts tossed a 28-yard Utah pass to Ridley on the initial play for Bama’s offense. The 38-yard, six-play drive stalled before kicker Adam Griffith missed wide left on a 48-yard FG attempt. Ridley responded on the ensuing possession with a 51-yard reception from Hurts, his longest of the afternoon. The five-play, 59-yard drive ended with Griffith successfully converting on a 36-yard FG for the first points of the game.
Alabama finished with 475 yards of total offense, 351 through the air. Although happy with the victory, the 6-1, 188 pound Ridley and teammates were not satisfied with the performance as he explained to BamaMag.com and assembled media following the win over the visiting USA Conference opponent.
