Alabama and Florida played in the historic first Southeastern Conference Championship Game and the Crimson Tide and Gators will play in the historic 25th SEC title game on Dec. 3 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Alabama clinched its spot in the title game as the Western Division champion with its 51-3 win over Mississippi State last week (along with Auburn losing to Georgia, 13-7), and Florida earned the Eastern Division title with its 16-10 win over LSU in Baton Rouge earlier today.
Alabama (10-0, 7-0 in SEC games) was to play Chattanooga in Bryant-Denny Stadium later today and will host Auburn at 2:30 p.m. CST next Saturday. Florida (8-2 overall and 6-2 in SEC games) will finish regular season play at Florida State next week.
Bama defeated Florida, 28-21, in 1992 en route to the national championship and the Tide downed Florida last year, 29-15, and also won the 2015 national title.
Bama has won the last two SEC championships among the 25 conference titles it has in league history.
Florida has 11 appearances in the SEC Championship Game, Alabama 10 to rank first and second in appearances. The teams have gone head-to-head eight times with both teams winning four games. Florida has a 7-4 record in the game, Bama 6-4, including a 4-1 record under Coach Nick Saban.
This year’s game will be the last SEC Championship Game in the Georgia Dome. Beginning next season the game will move into the new venue, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, right next to the current Georgia Dome.
The Peach Bowl will host a semifinals game in this year’s College Football Playoff in the Georgia Dome.
Alabama will open next year’s season on Sept. 2 against Florida State in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Florida is coached by former Alabama Offensive Coordinator under Saban Jim McElwain.
