After big win over Florida, Alabama has two gymnasts honored by SEC

Alabama doesn’t move up despite high score in gymnastics victory over Florida

Alabama’s outstanding performance in defeating Florida in Coleman Coliseum last Friday resulted in honors for a pair of Crimson Tide gymnasts, but not so much for Bama in the national rankings.
The Alabama gymnastics team is still ranked sixth after posting the highest team total in the nation for the past week and tying the highest score in the Southeastern Conference this season. Alabama posted a season-best 197.825 to beat No. 3 Florida.
There was recognition from the SEC for two Alabama gymnasts following the meet. Junior Kiana Winston earned SEC Gymnast of the Week while junior Nickie Guerrero earned SEC Specialist of the Week for their performances.
This Friday, the Crimson Tide travels to Lexington to face No. 10 Kentucky. It will be Alabama’s fifth top-10 showdown of the 2017 season.
Oklahoma and LSU remain first and second nationally, followed by the Gators in third, Utah in fourth and UCLA in fifth. With Alabama at No. 6, Michigan, Boise State, Georgia and Kentucky round out the top 10. Having already faced Oklahoma, LSU and Florida, the Tide still has Boise State, Georgia and Kentucky on its upcoming schedule.
Winston posted the highest all-around total in the SEC this season in leading the Crimson Tide to a win over the Gators with a career-best 39.700, which was best in the nation last week. It marks the third time this season that she has posted a career best in the all-around. Winston is one of just four gymnasts in the nation to score 39.7 or better this season and the only one from the SEC. She also scored one of just three 10.0s on the floor exercise in the nation this season on Friday.
Winston’s 10.0 on the floor exercise pushed Alabama to a 49.625 team score, the highest in the SEC this season. Winston also won the uneven bars with a 9.95 and was second on the beam with a 9.9. Her scores also helped propel the Crimson Tide to a 197.825 team mark, the highest in the nation last week and tied for the highest in the SEC this season.
Guerrero won the vault and balance beam against Florida and all three of her scores vs. the Gators went for 9.9 or better. She posted season-best 9.9 on the floor exercise to push Alabama to a 49.625 team score, the sixth-highest floor total in school history. Her winning 9.925 on the vault helped the Tide tie its season best of 49.375.
The SEC makes up half this week’s top 10, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Alabama, No. 9 Georgia and No. 10 Kentucky.
Alabama is ranked in the top 12 on all four events — fourth on the balance beam, sixth on vault, seventh on the floor exercise, and 11th on the uneven bars.
Individually in national rankings, Winston is seventh in the all-around. The junior from Fort Worth, Texas, is also second on the balance beam and fourth on the floor exercise. Winston is joined in the balance beam rankings by junior Nickie Guerrero (7th) and senior Aja Sims (10th). Sims and Guerrero are also ranked on the floor exercise, at 16th and 20th, respectively. Senior Katie Bailey is ranked 18th on the uneven bars.
After traveling to Lexington for a 7 p.m. EST meet against No. 10 Kentucky on Friday, Alabama returns home to Coleman Coliseum to face in-state rival Auburn on Feb. 17. Tickets to the meet are available through the Alabama Ticket Office in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum, at (205) 348-2262, and online at
