Sixth-ranked Alabama faces another ranked team in a tough schedule

Alabama rallied to defeat Auburn earlier this season

Alabama’s 3-4 record in gymnastics meets doesn’t look so good on the surface, but the Crimson Tide has faced one of the nation’s toughest schedules, including losing to No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 LSU, and No. 9 Kentucky.
In gymnastics, though, it is the scores that count, and as a result Alabama continues to be ranked sixth in the nation.
Bama will take on its seventh top 20 team of the season Friday when Coach Dana Duckworth’s Tide hosts No. 17 Auburn at 7:30 p.m. CST in Coleman Coliseum.
Alabama and Auburn met earlier this year in Birmingham with the Tide having one of its lowest scores of the year, but managing to finish the meet strong and come out with a 195.850-194.675 win over the Tigers.
Oklahoma, LSU and Florida remain in the first three spots in the nation. UCLA moved up to No. 4 and Utah dropped to No. 5 this. Boise State, Alabama’s opponent on Feb. 24, checks in at No. 7, followed by No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Kentucky, and No. 10 Georgia.
There are once again five Southeastern Conference teams in the top-10 nationally this week.
Alabama is in the top 10 on all four events this week, including fifth on the balance beam, sixth on the vault, seventh on the floor exercise and 10th on the uneven bars.
Junior Kiana Winston is eighth in the all-around, fourth on the floor exercise and fifth on the balance beam. Junior Nickie Guerrero is fourth and senior Aja Sims is 25th on the balance beam. Sims is also 16th on the floor exercise while senior Katie Bailey is 17th on the vault.
Tickets to the Alabama-Auburn meet are available through the Alabama Ticket Office in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum, at (205) 348-2262, and online at
