Versatile athletes wanted

Several top tight ends are available and interested in the Tide. Though Alabama is only likely to sign one for the position, the overall athleticism of the players being considered means they could be signed and then moved to other positions.

Tight Ends, Expected to sign: 1

Trent Davidson at this summer's NIKE Camp.

The present tight ends on the Alabama team include senior Donald Clarke, junior David Cavan, and sophomores Clint Johnston and Greg McLain. At this point, it's not clear where McLain will end up, but he's been working at tight end in recent weeks.

The Tide staff believes they need to add a body to this position that is versatile enough to catch, block, and run.

There are three in-state candidates under consideration and each is capable of playing another position. We believe one scholarship will go toward filling the vacancy that will be created by Donald Clarke's graduation.

The principal recruiting candidates include:

  • Trent Davidson 6-5 242 4.66 Brewton, AL - T. R. Miller HS
  • Travis McCall 6-2 230 4.69 Prattville, AL – Prattville HS
  • Tom Santi 6-5 220 4.52 Nashville, TN - M.B.A.
  • Nick Walker 6-6 230 4.83 Brundidge, AL - Pike County HS
  • P.J. Zimmerman 6-5 240 4.78 New Orleans, LA – Jesuit HS

Nick Walker could play several positions.

Straining to see through the swirling thick clouds of September, we predict:

NOTE: There is a strong possibility that Davidson, McCall, and Walker will all be taken with one staying at tight end and the other two moving to line positions.

PLEASE NOTE: In these segments we will attempt to examine this year's Tide recruiting picture position-by-position. But please keep in mind that this is only an assessment of players that our research indicates are being pursued by Alabama or that we believe will enter the picture before next February's Signing Day.

This is not presented as a photo copy of anyone's recruiting board. There undoubtedly will be names left off our lists and athletes added later.
