The trio included 6-9 power forward Alex Reese (Pelham HS, AL), 6-7 shooting guard Herb Jones (Hale County HS, AL) and 6-10 center Galin Smith (Clinton HS, MS). Alabama fell short to the visitors from Mississippi in a high scoring affair, 96-91, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on the campus of Alabama State University. The victory leaves Alabama with a one game lead in the overall series, 14-13.
Smith tallied six points, eight rebounds, turned the ball over twice, tallied three critical blocked shots and recorded a single assist and steal for the Magnolia State squad in 18 minutes. One of his most enthusiastic supporters is younger brother, Velmante Smith. The soon to be ninth grade football and basketball player at Clinton HS (MS) waved a facial cut-out likeness of his brother throughout the contest. Mississippi MVP, 6-1 point guard Jarkel Joiner, was the game's leading scorer with 24 points.
Alabama MVP Jones scored 17 points, grabbed a team leading eight rebounds, handed out two assists and had three steals in 24 minutes. Reese played 13 minutes and finished with three points, to go along with a single assist, blocked shot and steal.
