Last Chance U Stopover for Alabama Players

East Mississippi Community College located in Scooba is approximately 70 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa. The sparsely populated town of slightly over 700 residents near the Alabama border is a haven for athletes seeking scholarships to four-year institutions.

Academic and personal issues are frequently the reason for matriculating to the football powerhouse.  EMCC has won the three out of the past six (2011, 2013, 2014) NJCAA National Championships.  Academic Advisor Brittany Wagner until just recently was the prime individual entrusted with monitoring the all-important scholastic progress of student-athletes.  The single mother of one was introduced to the world on the 2016 Netflix hit documentary entitled “Last Chance U”.  Her prominent role of encouraging and guiding players was highlighted in the six-part series.  A symbiotic relationship exists between the pair with eligibility and graduation acting as the two mutual motivating goals.

Former Alabama defensive lineman Quinton Dial, Brandon Lewis, D.J. Pettway and Jarran Reed were mentored by the Mississippi State graduate.  Wagner was a guest at the Annual Senior Bowl Hall of Fame Dinner held on Thursday evening in Mobile at the Battle House Hotel.

BamaMag.com sat down to visit with the Clinton, MS native to discuss the circuitous journey and transformation of junior college student-athletes.
