Six More Football Signees

As everyone knows, football is an American game. But in most of the world, "football" is what we know as soccer. And while February is considered football signing time for followers of college athletics, it is also signing time for soccer. And Alabama Head Soccer Coach Don Staley has announced that six athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play at The Capstone beginning in the 2004 season.

"We worked extremely hard this year on this recruiting class and now comes the payoff," said Staley.

Carmel, Indiana native Jordan O'Banion will bring Alabama instant offense. O'Banion, a senior at Carmel High School, is an NSCAA Regional All-American and is also a three-time Indiana First Team All-State performer.

Staley said his number one concern was filling the team's immediate needs, one of which is filling in for graduated All-SEC defender Lauren Imwalle.

His solutions were Chelsea Stang, a senior at Surrey High School in British Columbia, Canada who is a member of the Canadian U-17 National Team and Gurnee, Illinois native, Natalie Kohn. A physical defender, Kohn currently plays club soccer for the prestigious Chicago Sockers F.C.

At the outside midfield positions, Staley will look to Suzie Beard, a tenacious and speedy outside midfielder who is currently a senior at Bowling Green High School. A native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Beard is a three-time all-state performer.

Rayme Hubbard, another outside midfielder who is currently a senior at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas, was named All-Area and Utility Player of the Year in the 2002 season.

Hayley MacDonald could anchor the center midfield position. A senior at St. Catherine's in Ontario, Canada, MacDonald spent time at the Canadian National Team camp.

"This is a solid group and I'm expecting all of them to come in and immediately challenge for starting positions," said Staley.

The current Bama team will begin its spring schedule on February 27 in Germantown, Tennessee at the Memphis Fury Tournament.
