Alabama/Southern Miss game notes

Alabama defeated Southern Miss 28-15 to clinch a winning season (6-5) and become eligible for a bowl bid. In addition, tile six wins this season doubles Alabama 's win total from last year as the Crimson Tide posted a 3-8 record in 2000.

POST-GAME NOTES, The Southern Miss Game (November 29,2001)

  • Alabama closes out the regular-season with three straight wins, defeating Miss. State (24-17), Auburn (31- 7) and Southern Miss (28-15).
  • Alabama scored 83 points in those three wins, averaging 27.33 points per game during the winning streak. The Crimson Tide allowed only 39 points in those three wins, an average of 13 points per game.
  • Senior quarterback Andrew Zow started his second straight game for Alabama and completed seven of 19 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Zow now has 5,984 career passing yards as the school's all-time leading passer. Zow's two touchdown passes gives him 35 career TD passes, tying Mike Shula (1983-86) as the school's all-time leader.
  • In addition, Zow ran nine times for a career-high 47 yards in the win over Southern Miss. His previous high was 24 rushing yards against Miss. State (Nov. 10,2001).
  • Junior tailback Ahmaad Galloway posted his third 100-yard rushing game of the season tonight against Southern Miss. Galloway ran 24 times for 126 yards and scored two touchdowns. Galloway also had 100 rushing yards at Vanderbilt (144) and Auburn (127). The Southern Miss game marks his first career back-to-back 100-yaard rushing game.
  • The 24 rushing attempts equals Galloway's career high set earlier this year against Vanderbilt (24-144) on Sept. 8. Galloway's two rushing touchdowns equals his career high set against Ole Miss during the 2000 season.
  • In addition, Galloway is now 16th on the Crimson Tide's all-time rushing list with 1,573 career yards (318 attempts). Against USM, Galloway moved past Steve Bowman (19th, 1,452), Dixie Howell (18th, 1,508), Wilbur Jackson ( 17th, 1,529) and Calvin Culliver (16th, 1,568).
  • Senior receiver Freddie Milons had two catches for 44 yards and one touchdown in tonight's win over Southern Miss. Milons is now second on the Crimson Tide's all-time receiving yards list with 1,860 yards. He surpassed fellow Mississippian David Bailey (1969- 71) in tonight's game. Bailey is now third with 1,857 career yards. Ozzie Newsome is the school's all-time leader with 2,070 career receiving yards.
  • Junior defensive tackle Jarret Johnson had his best game at Alabama with 10 tackles (9 solos), three sacks ( -21 ), one TFL ( -8) and one fumble caused in the win over USM.
  • Johnson leads Alabama with nine sacks this season. His three sacks against USM surpasses his previous total of two against Arkansas (2001) and Southern Miss (2000). In his last two games with USM, Johnson has five sacks.
  • Alabama recorded its first safety of the 2001 season when USM snapped a punt over its punters head in the third quarter and then the ball was batted out of the end zone. The safety gave Alabama a 15-8 lead. The last time Alabama recorded a safety was against Vanderbilt here at Legion Field during the 2000 season. In that game, Alabama tied the school record with two safeties against the Commodores.
  • Southern Miss' Rod Davis recorded the first ever defensive two-point conversion against Alabama as the Golden Eagles blocked a Neal Thomas extra point attempt. Alabama has recorded two defensive two-point conversions in its history.
