In-depth with Alabama Commitment: Michael Johnson

Offensive lineman, Michael Johnson from Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida, recently made a commitment to Alabama. Andrew Bone has a candid conversation with why the big man chose the Tide.

"I called Coach Shula about two weeks ago. I let him know I was committing to Alabama," said Michael Johnson.

Johnson had a few reasons for making his commitment.

"Well, the coaching staff is just excellent. I really like them all. I felt like I needed to go ahead and get it out of the way before my senior season began," said Johnson.

Johnson has been a life long Alabama fan and had several reason for choosing the Tide.

"I like the overall history. They have a great fan following and I have always been an Alabama fan. It felt like home. It is a really good time to get into the program."

The Alabama coaching staff made a strong impression on Johnson.

"Coach Shula is excellent. When I first met him, I felt like he was my best friend. I talked to him for a long time at the camp. It was kinda like he was my own brother. He is a really down to earth guy. I really like my position coach, Coach Connelly. He is great. He seems really excited about the way things are going," said Johnson

"I went to Alabama's camp and I received the offer after the camp. They took us on a tour around the campus and explained about the history of Alabama. All the history is just amazing."

Johnson made a few other camp stops over the summer, and took one unofficial visit.

"I also went to camps at Florida, Middle Tennessee State, and South Florida. I took an unofficial visit to LSU. LSU was a really deep second behind Alabama. I was just so much more impressed with Alabama's campus and coaching staff."

Alabama was the only school to officially offer Johnson, though several schools were hot on his trail.

"I did not officially receive any other offers. A lot of schools said that they wanted me. Besides Alabama, I was considering Auburn and LSU," said Johnson.

Johnson plans to make an official visit only to Alabama and will attend some Alabama games this fall.

" No, I don't plan to go anywhere except for Alabama for an official visit. Alabama has told me that I can come up there as much as I want to. I plan to go to the Alabama/Auburn game and the Alabama/Mississippi State game."

Johnson believes Coach Shula is going to make a difference for Alabama.

"They should have a really good team this year. They will have some tough games. I think Coach Shula is starting to turn the program around in the right direction."

Johnson will be playing both sides of the ball for Pine Forest.

"I will play on the defensive line this year. I played some last year, but not really that much. Alabama wants me as an offensive tackle."

Johnson is ready for his senior season to begin.

"We have a lot of returning starters and seniors this year. We should be pretty good. I have been working on getting faster and I need some more leg strength. I'm a really good pass blocker and I can run block good as well."

With several different reports, Johnson confirmed his height and weight.

"I am 6-5, 278. I am starting to get a little closer to 6-6. I have seen where some people have put me at 6-7 or 6-8, 285. I don't know where they got that from," said Johnson.

As a junior, Johnson earned All-Area Honorable Mention.
