Orange Jersey Notebook: Tide Safeties Hamstrung

Alabama's first-string safety Roman Harper wasn't on the orange jersey squad today, but the Tide's second-leading tackler from a year ago sat out the Tide's contact and team drills today for what he called a "tightened" hamstring.

Harper suffered from the same type of injuries in the spring and said that missing snaps in today's practice was precautionary. Alabama's other top safety, Charlie Peprah, is still in orange with a hamstring injury of his own.

"Charlie Peprah has missed a considerable amount of time," Head Coach Mike Shula said. Shula added that Peprah's missed time was "a little disturbing" since Peprah is still new to the safety position, but that his he didn't want to put him back into practice too soon.

With Peprah and Harper sidelined for the moment, fifth-year senior Carlos Andrews and true freshman Marcus Carter took most of the snaps with the first team, while Jeffrey Dukes and Chris James worked with the second team. Carter has seemed more assured of his assignments thank Dukes, the junior college transfer.

"His last three days have been much better than the first week," Shula said of Dukes. "He has to get better on his assignments but his reaction time is better."

"It's a lot different," Carter said. "There is a lot more speed out there with the first group. Getting a lot of reps is helping me get used to the coverages. The other defensive backs have been helping me out a lot."

Also from the orange jersey squad today, receiver Antonio Carter was wearing a cast on his injured leg today. Shula said that Carter would wear the cast for 10 days to "stabilize" a pulled muscle. Shula said that Carter's original injury has gotten better but that he is experiencing some "residual effects."

Chris Capps and Mark Sanders were also still in orange. B.J. Stabler (finger) and Antoine Caldwell (foot) were both looking on at today's practice after having surgery earlier during fall camp. Terrence Jones was in orange for the third consecutive day. Shula said the most of the orange jerseys'

Todd Bates missed a significant portion of Thursday morning's practice after aggravating a stinger injury during an inside drill. Bates missed some scrimmage plays on Monday after a run-in with Kyle Tatum. Justin Britt missed some of today's practice with a bruised shoulder.

Eric Gray and Aaron Johns were out of the orange and back in their normal jerseys. After being down on the field with an apparent leg injury Wednesday, freshman Cody Davis was not a part of the orange jersey squad.
