Alabama Coaches Go to See Top RB

Last Thursday Roy Upchurch, a 6-0, 195 running back for Godby High School in Tallahassee, had a huge night. Upchurch surpassed the 2,000 yard mark for the season with 261 yards on thirty-two carries. Alabama coaches were there to witness the big game.

"I had big night. It is just the same old, same old for me though," said Roy Upchurch.

There were a few surprise visitors in attendance for Upchurch's performance.

"Coach Shula and Coach Connelly, from Alabama, were at the game. They were just sitting in the stands like normal fans. I didn't really pay any attention to them during the game. "Coach Shula and Coach Connelly are nice coaches. They are really showing a lot of love towards me. The head coach coming to watch me play, with his schedule, is big," said Upchurch.

Upchurch has not set any official visits, but knows the five schools he will visit.

"I will probably wait, until after my season, before I set up any visits. I am going to visit North Carolina, Syracuse, Alabama, Auburn, and FSU."

Upchurch has a few reasons for visiting each school.

North Carolina: "They run the ball a lot. They give true freshmen the chance to play early. That is what really stands out to me."

Syracuse: "I don't really know about them. I just want to take a visit up there."

Alabama: "Alabama is showing a lot of love towards me. I know I will have a chance to play early. They are really giving me a lot of attention."

Auburn: "They run the ball a lot."

Florida State: "They are just like Alabama. They are showing me a lot of attention. I might not even take a visit there since they are right down the street. If I want to tour the campus, I can just walk down the road."

Though Upchurch has grown up in Tallahassee, he claims it will not have any effect on his decision.

"It really doesn't matter where I go. I am going to wait until after my visits before I make a decision. I want to find a good environment and a place I feel at home. Playing time is a factor, but I would have no problem red shirting," said Upchurch.

Godby is in a three-way tie for District 2 (3A) 1st place and will play Monday night to decide the District Champions.

"We ended up 7-2 with three-way tie for first. We will have the game Monday night with Rickards and Suwanee. I don't know which order we will play yet. The game will be at Cox Stadium."

Thursday night, Godby will also host Lincoln.

This season, Upchurch has 2,148 yards and twenty-three touchdowns.
