Recruiting Update: Harris headed elsewhere?

Defensive tackle is a clear need for Alabama this recruiting season. So what's the latest on LaRon Harris, a 6-3 lineman out of Memphis' Kingsbury High School?

Every head coach wants good offensive and defensive lines. They're the anchor of any successful team, and good lines start with good players. Harris can both dunk a basketball and turn a standing back flip, which is not common for anyone--much less an athlete of Harris' size.

"LaRon is the most athletic big man I have ever seen or coached," was Kingsbury High School Head Coach Duron Sutton's assessment of his senior lineman.

LaRon Harris was unable to reach LaRon, but we did talk to his mother. And at this point in the process, Alabama might be out of the running for Harris.

Asked where her son planned to play football, Harris' mother said, "Laron wants to go where he's needed. He wants to prove himself, and he'd like to go someplace close to home."

Harris is visiting Mississippi State this weekend, and Mrs. Harris says her son plans to visit Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn and Iowa in the coming weeks.

Mrs. Harris said that her son has received a lot of attention from SEC coaches. "We've had visits from so many head coaches. Back in December, there was somebody here every night."

She went on to say that where Harris will end up is still a question mark. "He decided that he'd take all his visits and then make a final decision."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Harris had been slated to visit Alabama in December, but that date was to have been rescheduled to January.
