Legendary quarterback coach, Roger Theder, works with Competitive Edge Sports helping future college and NFL quarterbacks improve their game. Chris Smelley enjoyed working with Coach Theder at the Kennedy/CES Southern Invitational.

"It was a lot of fun. This was the first time I have been working out with football, since the season was over. It was especially a lot of fun working out with Coach Theder. He had a lot of good things to say that will help me out a lot in the future. I feel if I came up here again, I could improve a lot more," said Smelley.

A rising senior, Smelley is one of the top quarterbacks in the south. After a phenomenal junior campaign, he is looking forward to this summer.

"This past year, I threw for 3,400 yards, 38 touchdowns, 60% completion percentage. I also had five rushing touchdowns. I really want to work on my mechanics, and get my strength up more. I will be camping at Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and a bunch of other ones."

Smelley is receiving a ton of interest from schools throughout the southeast.

"I have been getting letters from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State, and a few other schools. Those are the main ones. Alabama is sending me the most letters right now."

Smelley is not hesitant in naming an early favorite for his signature.

"I would have to say Alabama is my early favorite. I love the coaches. I have talked to the offensive coordinator. I love the head coach. I have been out there and they are all good guys," replied Smelly.

The star gunslinger has not received his first offer, but after several summer camps, look for that to change. will be a top priority for coaches throughout the country.

"I have not received any offers, but a bunch of schools are really talking to me. It could be a possibility that I make an early commitment somewhere, but I am not sure right now."

Scott Kennedy's Scouting Report: Chris Smelley has a quick release on the ball and doesn't have to muscle up on a throw to get velocity on it. He has an easy delivery that generates plenty of power, so he doesn't sacrifice accuracy on his throws long throws. Like many of the top quarterbacks in high school these days, Smelley does a lot of his damage from the shotgun formation, but his footwork looks good enough that he should have no trouble getting under center. Smelley is a smart player that makes good decisions, and throws a quick, accurate ball.
