Tide/Cornhusker matchup in gymnastics

Saturday night the Alabama gymnastics squad will face off against Nebraska of the Big 12. It marks Alabama's third home meet in as many weeks and the last home meet until February 22.

The Tide is ranked No. 5 going into Saturday's match-up against the No. 4 Cornhuskers. The rankings are figured by season average.

Nebraska has finished in the Super Six four of the last five seasons including a No. 5 finish last season.

A change in how the national gymnastics rankings are determined threw a shake through the top-20 this week and landed Alabama at No. 5.

Through the first three weeks of the regular season, the rankings were determined by high score. Starting this week, the rankings are figured by season average. Utah vaulted to No. 1. Crimson Tide victim Georgia fell out of the top spot to No. 2, while Oklahoma landed at No. 3. The Crimson Tide's Saturday opponent, Nebraska, stands just above them at No. 4.

Alabama is also ranked in the top-20 on all four events, with a pair of second-place rankings on floor and bars, a fourth-place ranking on vault and an eighteenth-place spot on the vault.

Individual Tide gymnasts are dispersed throughout the poll as well. Senior All American Andree Pickens has not only worked her way back into competition after suffering a season-ending injury in 2001, but also back into the rankings. She is now No. 2 on both bars and on vault.

Senior All American Raegan Tomasek and junior All-American Kristin Sterner are ranked in the all-around, at No. 18 and No. 21, respectively. Sterner, a member of the All-SEC team, is No. 22 on the floor as well.

Freshman Alexis Brion continues to tumble with ease, landing at the No. 9 spot in this week's floor rankings.

Junior All-American Kristin Sterner won the all-around, vault and floor exercise against Denver last Saturday. Sterner has gone all-around each of the first three meets of the season. Alabama posted its highest vault total of the season, a 49.125, behind Sterner's season best 9.9 vault.

Friday night will see the gymnastics team's alumni start to roll into town. Saturday's meet is Alumni Night and many former members of the Tide are expected to be in attendance.

Saturday night will also be Scholastic Achievement night at Coleman Coliseum. This week, local area elementary students that are on the "A-B" honor roll at their school were given voucher that can be exchanged for a ticket to the meet.

Tickets are available through the Alabama ticket office (205.348.BAMA) and SouthTix (800.240.2300).
