Laird dominant again

COLUMBUS, GA-The No. 18 ranked (USA Today/NFCA) Crimson Tide softball team (9-7) showed no hangover effects of their upset of fourth-ranked Oklahoma the night before as Alabama dropped the Utah Utes 3-0 in the final game of round robin action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

Not even 24 hours after her dominating performance against Oklahoma, Shelley Laird (5-3) took the ball and threw another gem, this time a two-hit shutout while striking out seven Utah batters to record her 96th career victory.

The Alabama offense wasted no time, jumping on top in the bottom of the first inning. Suzanne Olcott led off with a single to center and was sacrificed to second by Jennifer Reach. Jackie McClain singled to left centerfield scoring Olcott for a 1-0 Bama lead.

Laird was again dominant in pitching a two-hitter.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Crimson Tide added to its lead on two hits and a Utah error. McClain led off with a double over the head of right fielder Masie Ota. Emily Currie then singled to left field advancing McClain to third. However an errant throw by left fielder Traci Keller allowed McClain to score staking Bama to a 2-0 lead.

Alabama kept applying the pressure in the fifth inning as Angela Johnson singled to centerfield, was sacrificed to second by Leah White and took third on a passed ball. Olcott drew a walk and Reach reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out. McClain hit a long fly ball to centerfield that was deep enough to score Johnson from third for a 3-0 Alabama lead.

The Crimson Tide offense was clicking all day as the lead-off hitter reached base in five of the six innings and eight of nine Alabama hitters recorded a base hit. McClain paced the Alabama offense going 2-2 with a single and a double and two RBI.

Bama must now wait for the outcome of the Oklahoma-Wisconsin (12:30 p.m. EST) game to find out whether they will be playing at either 5:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. (EST) in either the Gold or Silver bracket.
