Bama hauls in fifth commitment

Someone obviously forgot to tell Dennis Franchione that he's supposed to wait until next fall before hauling in all these commitments, because Alabama has just reeled in No. 5.

Montgomery's Mario Lane has just announced his commitment to Alabama.

A 6-5, 250-pound tight end/defensive end prospect, Lane has been clocked at 4.70 in the 40-yard dash. Continuing Franchione's preference for outstanding athletes, Lane is a three-sport star, competing in basketball and baseball during the winter and spring.

Lane plays both defensive end and tight end for Carver High School, and could project at either position on the college level.

Following a junior season in which he caught 36 passes for 960 yards, Lane was named an All-Metro selection. He averaged 26.7 yards per reception.

On defense, Lane was credited with 85 tackles, eight sacks and two fumble recoveries last season.

Lane is powerful in the lower body, squatting 405 pounds. However a major goal is to increase his bench press from 225.

The Montgomery native carries a 2.6 grade point average and is scheduled to take the ACT in April.

Lane has also received interest from Tennessee, Florida, Nebraska and Arkansas.
