Second week sights: photo report

Some stray scenes and images from Bama's second full week of spring drills.

Junior wideout Brandon Greer makes a sure-handed grab. Greer is currently running second string at one of three wide receiver positions.

Gerard Clark removes his cleats following practice. Seeing action mainly at defensive end during Saturday's scrimmage, the sophomore lineman has yet to make a significant dent on the depth chart. However, many linemen take a couple of years to adjust to college ball, and you don't give up quickly on athletes with his combination of size and speed.

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Ben Pollard strides away, following pre-practice stretching. Experienced practice observers report that the squad looks strong and quick, both a tribute to Pollard's off-season efforts.

Santonio Beard observes the action from the sideline. Beard is currently a co-starter with Ahmaad Galloway at tailback, but he's determined to win the job outright if he can. In Saturday's scrimmage he was the leading rusher with 50 yards on five carries.

Coach Franchione delivers some words of wisdom during practice. Commenting that the team is currently light years ahead of last year's group, Franchione is so far happy with his squad's progress during spring.

Last week saw plenty of high school coaches and players visiting practice. Here LeRon McClain of Tuscaloosa Central looks on with his coach Robert Higginbotham and teammate Terrence Jones. The trio from Tuscaloosa County are frequent visitors at practice, as both McClain (fullback) and Jones (linebacker) are seriously considering Alabama as their school of choice.

Former Tide star Walter Lewis was a visitor last week. Here he talks with just graduated Tide quarterback Andrew Zow. Lewis held many of the career marks that Zow broke last season. That's Cedric Burns, Player Relations Coordinator, in the background.

Sophomore receiver Jay Stubbs, the son of former Bama Quarterbacks Coach Charlie Stubbs, makes the catch. After missing two years while away on a Mormon mission, Stubbs is once again a member of the Alabama squad.
